This sophisticated compass "with a lace cover" supports a compass rose whose 32 divisions correspond to each of the courses (each one equivalent to 11.25º) and is provided with an external ring divided in 360º. The first real evidence of the use of the nautical needle by Mediterranean navigators dates from the 12th century, however, it is presumed that it must have been in use for a long time before that.
